Mulatto Says She May Change Her Name

by Daryl Nelson

Some rap monikers sound dope and crazy inventful, like Black Thought. Then there are others like Childish Gambino that don't have that same cool ring to it.

Georgia raised-rapper Mulatto has gotten a lot of backlash over her name. The word "mulatto" describes a person who's mixed with black and white, and many have taken offense to it.

The controversy has caused the 21-year-old to re-think her name, which she may change. Earlier this month, Mulatto received a lot of backlash for first saying that she doesn't like to identify as black or white, then later saying she's black.

"I can't say too much because we're working on something right now, but I would be lying to say it hasn't crossed my mind before," she told HipHopDX about her name. "It is a controversy that I hear and see every day as far as my name goes, so I would be lying to say no I never thought of that. But I can't say too much because right now, it's going to be a part of something bigger."

What do you think about Mulatto's name? Do you find it offensive?
