Ice Cube Says Goodbye To "Boyz N The Hood" Director John Singleton

by HHL JT

John Singleton's injection of a Hip Hop ethos into popular cinema made him a giant of the culture.

Singleton, who died yesterday at 51, was particularly fond of using rappers and singers like 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, Tyrese, Andre 3000 and Janet Jackson in his films.

Singleton launched the acting career of Ice Cube when he cast him as Darrin “Doughboy” Baker in 1991's Boyz N The Hood.

Cube paid tribute to Singleton on Twitter.

I was discovered by a master filmmaker by the name of John Singleton. He not only made me a movie star but made me a filmmaker. There are no words to express how sad I am to lose my brother, friend & mentor. He loved bring the black experience to the world. ..Us at Cannes ‘90 pic.twitter.com/CaRKjZtjgB
