Famed director John Singleton has died 12 days after suffering a stroke and falling into a coma.

He was 51.

Singleton burst onto the scene in 1991, directing Boyz n the Hood. The inner-city crime drama made him the youngest person to ever be nominated for a best directing Oscar and the first African American.

He's since directed films like Poetic Justice (1993) Shaft (2000), 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003), and Four Brothers (2005).
