Vic Mensa Goes Off On DJ Akademiks For Clowning Chicago's Violence And Drill Music [WATCH]

by Daryl Nelson

Things got pretty heated between Vic Mensa and DJ Akademiks on the last episode of Everyday Struggle.

At one point during the discussion, Mensa confronted Akademiks and accused him of making light of Chicago's murder rate and clowning Drill music.

"I wanted to slap you in your face," said Mensa. "I really felt as if people exactly like you sensationalized and made a following off of clowning situations we go through in real life ... What made you feel like you had a space to have a perspective of our people dying on a daily basis? ... There's nothing constructive about it ... To tell you the truth, I really think you are a bitch."
Mensa then brought up his friend Tray 57, a rapper from Chicago who was gunned down in 2014. Around that time, Akademiks spoke about the incident but did it in a joking way.

"That's a nigga I grew up with," said Mensa "I've known [him] since I was five years old and to see you come on the Internet with this corny ass little voice and make jokes about it ... I was waiting to see you  ... Who made you eligible to even weigh in? You really built a following clowning off our deaths ... You're like basically one of those little kids that makes fan fiction on the Internet, and just creates these worlds about people they don't even know. It's kind of sick when it's real people dying young. I'm at those funerals."
How did Akademiks defend himself? He said that although he was making jokes about the violence in Chicago, he was still trying to be constructive and tell young people how dangerous gang life and drill music are. What do you think about his reasoning? You can peep the exchange below, as well as a few Twitter reactions.

I support any artist who tells Akademiks that he's a piece of shit to his face. Shout out to Vic Mensa.

And Vic Mensa should take that energy and put it into stopping the war in chiraq instead of getting mad at someone reporting on it
