However, Philly media personality Howard Eskin is reporting Simmons is going broke and may have to start playing for the 76ers so he can pay off his mortgage and tax bills.

The 76ers resumed fining Simmons his game checks when he refused to report for the team's current six-game West Coast swing, which they finish tonight in Golden State.

In addition, Simmon's fellow Aussie Andrew Bogut is hearing from well-placed sources that the league is supporting the Sixers in their showdown with Simmons and doesn't want them to trade Simmons -- who has four years left on his contract -- unless they get fair value.

The league is concerned that if the 76ers give in to Simmons, it will encourage other players to sign max contracts with their original teams -- which are worth more than what you can get in free agency -- and then try to force trades.
