Nicki Minaj Tells Michael B. Jordan To Change The Name His Rum Because It's Offensive

by Daryl Nelson

Michael B. Jordan launched his rum brand called J'Ouvert a few days ago and many accused him of cultural appropriation, including Nicki Minaj.

CNN writes that J'Ouvert "Refers to both the Antillean Creole French term meaning daybreak and an annual festival held in Trinidad and Tobago" and it's used to celebrate Caribbean culture as well as slaves being freed.

“I’m sure MBJ didn’t intentionally do anything he thought Caribbean ppl would find offensive— but now that you are aware, change the name & continue to flourish & prosper,”wrote Nicki, who's Trinidadian.

Jordan has since responded to the complaints and said he's planning to change the name of his rum line.

“I just wanna say on behalf of myself & my partners, our intention was never to offend or hurt a culture we love and respect & hoped to celebrate & shine a positive light on ... We hear you, I hear you and want to be clear that we’re in the process of renaming. We sincerely apologize and look forward to introducing a brand we can all be proud of.”
