Madlib Explains Why He Chose To Work With Freddie Gibbs

by Daryl Nelson

Madlib and Freddie Gibbs have put out what many have called the best Hip Hop album of 2019 in Bandana. They released the critically acclaimed Piñata album in 2014 as well, plus, some EPs.

Madlib recently sat down with Complex for an interview, and at the 2:23 mark he talked about what initially drew him to Gibbs.

"He was funny. He'd keep you laughing," Madlib explained. "Some hood stuff. He's like one of my cousins. I have my family like that, so I relate to him."

Madlib also explained why working with the Indiana rapper has exposed him to a new audience.

"Because he has a different crowd," said the West Coast producer. "He kind of does trap music. I also do trap music, but I'm known for whatever you all know me for. It's a mesh of my weird underground world and his gangster hood stuff, you know what I mean? So I treated it like Compton's Most Wanted. They used raw loops and crazy story-telling and stuff."

Madlib said he's working with Pusha T and Griselda as well during the interview. And last year it was revealed that Madlib and the group Black Star have a project coming out.

Would you call Bandana the best Hip Hop album of last year?
