Lauryn Hill Breaks Down Why She Never Followed Up 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill'

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is a classic album.

In fact, Rolling Stone named it the best Hip Hop album of all-time.

Oddly, Lauryn never followed up the 1998 commercial and critical hit with another album.

She explained why on the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Album podcast.

"With The Miseducation, there was no precedent. I was, for the most part, free to explore, experiment and express. After the Miseducation, there were scores of tentacled obstructionists, politics, repressing agendas, unrealistic expectations, and saboteurs everywhere. People had included me in their own narratives of their successes as it pertained to my album, and if this contradicted my experience, I was considered an enemy," she said.

There is another more sinister theory out there.  Three-time Grammy-winning Jazz producer Robert Glasper has suggested Lauryn knew she couldn't repeat her success because she stole all of the music on Miseducation.

“You can’t come into a situation, especially when you’ve already stolen all of my friend’s music. Miseducation was made by great musicians and producers that I know personally…I went into it knowing ‘Okay, you steal music,'” he said. "So you got a big head about music you didn't write .. the one thing you did that you did great, you didn't do," he said in a 2017 radio interview.
