Jay-Z Talks Lil Mama Crashing The 'VMA' Stage During His Performance With Alicia Keys

by Daryl Nelson

Jay-Z was asked if Lil Mama was forgiven for jumping on stage when he and Alicia Keys performed “Empire State of Mind” at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards and he said she was.

“Of course, of course," he told Genius’ Rob Markman on Twitter Spaces. "C’mon. Don’t do that… That’s our sister. Man, we love her. I wouldn’t recommend people just jumping on other artists’ stages ... She’s a New Yorker… She got excited. Things happen. Of course we love her… Yes, she’s forgiven. It’s all love and she was coming from a place of love. It’s just [she] may have been a little too excited.”

Keys also talked about Lil Mama crashing the stage while on Drink Champs recently and said she didn't even notice it.

“The whole show I was iced ... so focused on making it amazing," she recalled. "I went backstage and Jay was like, ‘So, you ain’t see that?’ And I was like, ‘What?’ And he was like, ‘Nah, you ain’t just see what just happened?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, we killed it. That’s what happened.’”

Do you think Lil Mama will ever live that moment down?
