De La Soul Kickstarter For New Album Ends After They Raise $600K

by A. Mia Logan

Long Island rap veterans De La Soul started a Kickstarter campaign not too long ago to raise funds for their first album in over a decade. The group originally sought out a goal of raising  $110,000 for the project. However, the campaign made $180,974 within the first day of its launch. Now, a little more than a month later, the campaign has raised a total of  $600,829 from approximately 11,000 backers.

“With over 200 hours of sounds, and vibes, equal to about 250 to 300 full-length vinyl LPs, it's time that we get to the work," the group wrote on their Kickstarter page. "We are now in the process of going back to that 200+ hours of music, listening, enjoying and discovering those special moments where, musically, something magical happens, where interesting sounds and layers were forgotten, where new sounds can be sampled, looped, chopped, filtered and arranged, freely, without the intrusive presence of publishing politics and the infamous 'sample police."
The album does not have a release date yet. But it's set to have appearances from Gorillaz and 2 Chainz and will also feature original samples from studio musician freestyle jam sessions recorded by De La Soul and their production team.
