Black Thought Explains How He Feels About Always Being Underrated

by Daryl Nelson

There are some rap fans who use the craziest logic when discussing who the greatest rapper is.

For example, you'll hear some say things like, "He's the best rapper because he starred in a bunch of movies. What other rappers out there have starred in a bunch of movies?"

The discussions on who the best is can get really ridiculous.

But many of those who don't use things like money, chart position or how much "swag" a person has to determine who the best is, often choose Black Thought, who's been delivering top-tier rhymes for over two decades.

There are plenty, however, who say he's still underrated, which the Philly rhymer discussed with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1.

Thought was promoting his new album with Danger Mouse, Cheat Codes, a no frills, no nonsense project full of head-snapping beats and intense, thought-provoking rhymes.

“I think over the years I’ve definitely felt like, yeah. I mean, people, everyone says that. Everyone I meet, ‘You’re so underrated, you’re so underrated,'" said Thought. “Or you’re in interviews and it’s, ‘How do you feel to be so underrated?’ But yeah, I don’t know. The people whose opinions matter to me have always properly rated me, so it’s never really been a huge deal for me.”

If you don't think Black Thought is rap's greatest lyricist, then who? And please explain why.
