Beanie Sigel is awake and recovering from wounds that authorities and Sigel's laywer initially called life threatening, according to the Associated Press.

Doctors at the Atlantic Care Regional Medical Center performed surgery on the 40-year old not long after he was shot in the back during an altercation Friday morning near his home in Pleasentville, New Jersey.

According to police Sigel, whose real name is Dwight Grant, was fired on after returning home from dropping his kids at school. Another man was injured, but not shot, and refused medical attention.

Police chased down a car that may have been involved in the shooting and arrested one man, but haven't released his name or any information about him.

Sigel’s lawyer, Fortunato Perri Jr, has said the Sigel wasn't the intended target of the shooting and that the incident may have stemmed from a family dispute, adding that investigators are talking to Sigel's relatives.

Sigel was also shot several times during a robbery attempt in 2006, and the year before he was acquitted of attempted murder. In August, he was released from jail after serving about two years for tax evasion.
